8 Cringe-Worthy Fashion Mistakes I Used to Make

Hands up, who’s got a list of cringe-worthy fashion mistakes they’ve made from about the age of 13 to, well, last week?

Don’t worry, we’ve all been there. Some mistakes haunt me on Facebook’s Time Hop, some mistakes I’m still making hoping no one will notice and some mistakes are dead and buried, just like my Ugg boots.

Being too matchy matchy…
Seriously, why did no one tell me to stop doing this? If my bag was red, my lipstick, shoes, nail polish, belt and hair accessories ALL had to be red. I hold all my friends and colleagues personally accountable for this mistake.

Wearing too much black…
I used to absolutely live in the colour (or lack thereof, should I say), and now I look back at my old blog posts and realise how monotonous they all felt. I still shy away from certain crazy prints and neon hues, but I’ve definitely evolved past the if-it’s-not-black-I’m-not-wearing-it phase. *Yawn*

Succumbing¬†to trends that don’t suit me…
Fashion has this incredibly elitist way of making you feel that you don’t belong if you’re not wearing what’s hot. One of the most important things I’ve learned over the years is that trends don’t last; they come and go. So not only does this end up being incredibly expensive to try and keep up with, you’ll also find yourself with no capsule wardrobe and no ‘forever’ pieces that you can always rely on. And lest we forget that trends were all started by someone else, so falling victim to them every season will start to negative from your own sartorial identity.

Wearing too little…
Self explanatory…

Wearing too much…
And I don’t mean modest dressing (because we all know I’m the biggest cheerleader of conservative style), but rather trying to wear too many prints, trends, colours or accessories at once and generally just looking like fashion threw up on me.

Not caring about accessories. Ever.
Mmm, this is still kinda true. I’ve never been a big accessory wearer because I think they get in the way and I end up taking everything off and losing it, but I’m also very aware of how an accessory can totally transform your look. The addition of a stack of rings, a choker necklace or statement earrings can take your look from 0 to 100, and I really don’t take advantage of that enough. It probably doesn’t help that I don’t have my ears pieces, but this is all starting to change thanks to my new favourite clip-on brand.¬†

Living in leggings and flip flops…
…which, after I started working at Grazia, I quickly learned are cardinal sin of fashion. During my high school years in Dubai, before I went to uni and even considered a job in fashion, I absolutely lived in leggings. I even wore cheap black New Look leggings to the first day of my internship at OK! – cringe.

Wearing my big ugly FitBit out in public instead of an elegant watch you’d expect a fashion girl to wear…
Oh wait, I still do that.
