Sri Lanka has always been one of those countries I’ve been dying to visit, and with it only being a four hour flight from Dubai, I can’t believe I haven’t gone sooner!
Anyway, I have finally crossed it off my bucket list! Now, I am by no means a travel writer. I don’t follow any travel bloggers or buy travel magazines, but I have already received so many messages & questions from people asking where to go, where to stay and what to see, so I have decided to share the last 10 days of my life with the blogsphere!
There are literally so many places to visit in Sri Lanka. And depending on what kind of holiday you want (lying on the beach/trekking through the jungle/going on safari), it’s hard to know where to go. Well my boyfriend and I wanted to do as much as we possibly could, and I really think the best way to know what to do is simply word of mouth.
So we touched down in the capital (Colombo) on our first night, and decided to put ourselves up in a hotel 20 mins from the airport. We stayed in the Amagi Resort in Negombo (we were literally there for 12 hours only), which was nice but nothing special, and left the next morning for Kandy. The roads in Sri Lanka are an absolute joke. The distance from Colombo to Kandy was only like 74km, but took over 3 hours, because there are no motorways built.
We arrived in Kandy, where we stayed at the Cinnamon Citadel – a huge 4 star hotel, and probably the most well known in the area. What I recommend doing whilst in Kandy: visiting Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage (about a 1.5 hour drive from Kandy), the Botanic Gardens (perfect if you want to walk off all the curries you’ve been eating), Temple of the Tooth and a spice garden.
