Yugen is one of the many new restaurants on Jumeirah Beach Road that I drive past every day, and have never thought twice about going into.
Even when the invite pinged in my inbox, inviting me to try it out, I did a quick Google search to see what kind of eatery it was, and I could hardly find any info at all. I agreed, with some apprehension, and headed down on a Saturday evening with a group of friends.
On arrival I was immediately impressed with the decor; a Cherry Blossom Tree with twinkling LED lights stands prettily and proudly outside the front door, hinting that there’s Japanese food inside. The interiors boast a sushi bar, overlooking a live cooking station, swinging chairs hanging from the ceiling (which were occupied the whole time we were there, so I didn’t get to channel my inner 8-year old girl and try them out), dimly lit chandeliers and funky art work with 3D camels protruding out of frames. The aesthetic was kind of all over the place, but it made for an interesting backdrop and definitely gave a new meaning to the term ‘fusion’,
The food I was pretty blown away by. For starters we ordered their best sellers: shrimp tempura, truffle fries, mexican nachos, beef tacos and a selection of sliders – there wasn’t one dish I didn’t love. For mains we were actually pretty full (side note: portion sizes are on point), so we shared a plate of their Yugen on Fire sushi, which was absolutely delicious. By dessert, all I could manage was a teaspoon of the chocolate fondant, which was also hoovered up by the rest of my fellow diners. Yugen might not be my typical restaurant of choice, especially as it’s not licensed, but this newly opened eatery should be next on your list of places to try – it won’t disappoint!
